Paweł Prewencki: A deeply personal exploration of emotions and art in filmmaking.

What are the most formidable challenges inherent to the profession of filmmaking?

The biggest challenge in working on LACK was working with other authors. Because it was such a personal film full of emotions. It was, as it turned out, an art therapy process.

Could you elaborate on the wellspring of your creative inspiration for this particular short film?

In part, the film’s visual art draws on the films of Ryszard Czekała. The discovery of the film’s themes to the audience was inspired by prenatal time. The time when we heard new information in the following months.

Could you elucidate on the central thematic underpinning of your film?

It was the death of our son Mieszko

How do you navigate the task of strategizing cost-effective promotional efforts when operating within a constrained budget?

I limited the promotion of the film to sending the film to international festivals. I personally sent the film to about 600 festivals. At first I was helped by the Krakow Film Foundation which, however, lost its funding and could not run the project. Then I received support from Promofest.org.

In today's dynamic marketplace, how pivotal do you consider the role of film distribution?

Without distribution, no one will hear about the film.

For individuals contemplating the path of self-distribution, what counsel or insights can you offer?

Quite a few film festivals are profit-driven businesses. Watch out for emails with discounts. Such festivals have lots of non-monetary rewards! It is a scandal that portals like filmfreeway allow such organizations to advertise. Always check the websites of festivals!

In your estimation, what level of significance do short films hold for aspiring filmmakers seeking to embark on a career in directing?

No need to make long films! it’s a completely different category of cinema.

Reflecting on your professional journey thus far, could you share an instance of the most formidable challenge you encountered and how you surmounted it?

The hardest part of animation is getting the funding for implementation. Because of this, I have not completed one film.

What, in your view, are the critical factors that contribute to the creation of a cinematic masterpiece?

The Producer must give the author a lot of confidence. The author should not pretend to be someone else.

If you could revisit the inception of your career, are there any aspects or decisions you would choose to alter in hindsight?

I would make more music-based films
