Nazanin Vahed: Crafting identity through love and courage

What are the most formidable challenges inherent to the profession of filmmaking?

What an interesting question. In my opinion, always being creative and always ready to create is one of the most difficult challenges of filmmaking

Could you elaborate on the wellspring of your creative inspiration for this particular short film?

The news about trans people has always been of interest to me. On the other hand, it was interesting for me to make this situation more complicated. That’s why I included the love story in this challenge. I like to put someone who has a problem with his gender identity in a difficult situation and portray his reaction to this situation.

Could you elucidate on the central thematic underpinning of your film?

The subject is about a boy who has a female soul and brain and was born in the wrong body. The young boy is afraid of identifying his true identity. She falls in love with a man and this love gives her the courage to reveal her true identity

How do you navigate the task of strategizing cost-effective promotional efforts when operating within a constrained budget?

In my opinion, a filmmaker is also a director. With the skill of managing and placing expert people in each part, as well as using the ability of expert people in their right place. The filmmaker does not have to have a large production to produce an independent short film. According to an old proverb; less is more

In today's dynamic marketplace, how pivotal do you consider the role of film distribution?

It is very important in the overall review. But as an independent Iranian filmmaker, I am with this problem. Because the short film market hardly wants cinematic productions

For individuals contemplating the path of self-distribution, what counsel or insights can you offer?

Get help from others but make the final decision yourself

In your estimation, what level of significance do short films hold for aspiring filmmakers seeking to embark on a career in directing?

Making a short film is like going to college. You can have trial and error. You can get to know the camera, editing and acting. Learn to manage a group. And all these abilities will help you in the future of filmmaking

Reflecting on your professional journey thus far, could you share an instance of the most formidable challenge you encountered and how you surmounted it?

The biggest challenge is managing a group and at the same time as a woman it can be a bit difficult. You must be both serious and flexible. Along with all this, you should keep all your attention on being creative. Do not be afraid to say no and take the group along in the direction of your wishes

What, in your view, are the critical factors that contribute to the creation of a cinematic masterpiece?

Being an observer Always pay attention to everything. Enjoy hearing and seeing and get ideas. And always jot down ideas

If you could revisit the inception of your career, are there any aspects or decisions you would choose to alter in hindsight?

Of course, I will be more serious in my work. I am not afraid to say ideas and I try everything so that the final idea is pleasing to me
